I am most Thankful for…

I have so much to be thankful for. I have a loving family, great friends and I’m getting a wonderful education at the University of Missouri.

In fact, my education is what I want to talk about today. I’d like to thank all my teachers, starting in Kindergarten. Thank you for giving up your time to go above and beyond to help me reach my goals.

Black women make up 6.5% of the U.S. population yet make up only 3.8% of characters on TV.

Asian or Latino men make up 11% of the U.S. population yet make up only 1.9% of characters on TV.

These statistics don’t just apply to television. They also apply to journalism.

Newsrooms need to be just as diverse to represent all backgrounds not only in race but also in religion, economic status, and more.

Sam Freedman

This week I went and had dinner with author and New York Times columnist, Sam Freedman. We went to dinner around 7 p.m. at the Wine Cellar. It was a fantastic meal! But the most important part of the meal consisted of a few pieces of advice from Sam Freedman.

Accuracy

This week, I was sitting in my religious studies class and we were talking about Emile Durkheim. During part of our discussion my teacher brought up an article about when Big Tex had caught on fire. The article talks about how Big Tex is a “shrine” and the article then mentions Durkheim because of his references to a “totem.” My teacher then goes on to talk about how mistaken this reporter was and how many religious studies scholars were angry and wrote about how much she misunderstood Durkheim.

This is just once example of the importance of accuracy.
